My Friend Don

Don and I started our careers in waste managment in 1989, him at the County of Wellington and me at the City of Guelph where we collaborated on many projects over the years. Now he was a competitive man, and of course, the County could do recycling better than the big city and we set out to prove each other wrong and had a great time doing it. Together we slew bureaucratic dragons and spoke as municipal waste partners to other municipalities. My favourite Don story was from an AMRC Board of Director's retreat in November at a resort on Rice Lake. We had drove up on the Friday night when I'd boasted that I was going to catch fish for breakfast and Don laughed and announced that he'd better go and buy bacon and eggs. Well he was right, the next morning the temperature had dropped below zero and my fishing line kept freezing at the rod tip. Of course he was right, but to rub it in, he had opened up the windows in the kitchen and placed a huge floor fan to blow out the smell of coffee, toast and bacon towards the dock...he had called it right, when I sheepishly returned to his magnificent breakfast, fishless but pleased he had cooked extra!

I will miss his huge laugh, his generosity and yes, even his over application of cologne that clung to every cup, fork and spoon he touched. Don you will remain one-of-a-kind!
