The following is from Kevin and Cathy Maggs. We are on a kayak trip at present but wanted to share with you our memories.
“I miss Kurt. Although I will miss the nice old fella that would drop by our house on his scooter for a chat, I was missing Kurt way before I heard of his passing.
I miss the Kurt that kept paddling well into his 70's even though he was experiencing severe back pain. I miss the Kurt that went tobogganing with his kayak and broke 3 ribs, I miss the Kurt that Kurt's corner was named after. I miss the Kurt that, on a whim, would try to paddle onto the low bridge, flip his kayak, get dragged under the bridge and have to swim his way to the other side. He was in very real danger at that point and stayed calm though out. When asked why he didn't panic, he said, "Well, at least no one was shooting at me". I also miss the Kurt who would listen to our stories of the wild rivers we had paddled and our tales of pseudo bravery. I miss how he would enjoy those stories and how they would always remind him of something that happened in the war. Then he'd relate a story about skiing with the alpine troops that would just amaze us. Kurt always pushed the limits and as such was an inspiration to many kayakers. How could you not miss a guy like that?”
