Brief History of Mom

Ida Roth (nee Ebneter) was born March 5, 1931 in Herisau, Switzerland, to Amand and Maria Ebneter. She was the second youngest child in a family of eleven children. Tragedy struck the family when her mother became ill and needed to be hospitalized for a lengthy time. The family became sealed in the New Apostolic Church. As the father could not care for all of children he wrote to the Apostle in charge of Switzerland at that time, and asked whether any New Apostolic families would be willing to take care of his children in the interim. Grandma Mueller (Dad’s grandmother) offered to care for a child and so it was that Mom was introduced to the Roth and Mueller families. Reini and Ida met when Mom was three and Dad eight years old. Mom returned to her paternal home when she started school. She carried on until she finished College. She was fluent in four languages: German, French, Italian and English and worked for several years as International Switchboard Operator. Reini and Ida always maintained their friendship. Reini immigrated to Canada in 1954 and wrote many love letters to Ida and she finally accepted his proposal for marriage and came to Canada in 1955. They were married within the week of her arrival to Canada, in the Kitchener Church by the late Bishop Kreutner. They moved around a lot during the first couple of years as Dad was trying to secure work. They lived in Shelbourne, Guelph, Hamilton and then purchased a farm in Arthur after the birth of their second daughter Susan. Four more girls were to follow. The farm life was lonely for mother and not very lucrative and so they decided to sell the farm and moved to Fergus. Mom took a position working nights at Still Meadow Farms to help support the family. Their home was always a Bethany to the congregation and especially to the youth. Many, many fellowship were held in their home on St. Patrick St. and R.R. #1 Fergus. Mother cooked many meals, entertained and hosted many overseas Ministers and their wives. Mom has six daughters, sixteen grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She was a woman of faith and her legacy will live on. She was predeceased by her husband and one child. She is the last of 11 siblings to enter eternity.
