For all of us "old guard" who started our fledgling teaching careers at Thistletown Collegiate in the mid-70's, Gord Coll was one of the old distinguished VPs who held the school in absolute control. He was fair, but firm and had a masterful voice resounded off the walls if needed to direct someone's attention, or de-fuse a potential situation. He was the voice of "the gods"!
If a student ever had the nerve to skip a class and be foolish enough to loiter in the hallways Gord's metal-tipped, thick-souled Brogues would clickety-clack a warning for miles and the illegals would scatter! As I found out Gord's early-warning system was a way of eliminating a confrontation before it occured. I adopted that system in my teaching career, but whistled instead.
Out of school Gord was a distinguished gentleman who laughed hard at a good joke and had a few rippers of his own.
The Etobicoke Board of Education was a better system for the students, and the teachers were better teachers and people by having known Gord Coll.
Respectfully submitted,
