Recollections...

When we first met our step-grandfather Bill as children, we were awed by his big barrel chest, old-fashioned business know how, and generous laugh. It was exciting when he visited. He would tell us stories, offer us practical advice and secretly tease our parents (much to our delight!). As we grew older, we came to learn that Bill also possessed a deep curiosity about the world around him. Within every story he told about his life, one could discern a profound spirit for adventure. From the eight-year old paper-route entrepreneur, to the young shoe salesman playing craps ("for the first and last time") in the basement of the store, to the husband and father moving his family across the country and back again. Bill always seemed to want to explore what lay around the next corner, forever thirsting to learn. Even in the last years of his life, when he was weakened by his illness, he would still make the effort to ask us what we could teach him of the world from our travels, our studies and our work. It was a great honour to have Bill as our step-grandfather, and we will dearly miss him. May he rest in peace. Jessica and Caleb
