Isabella, Ranger and Me

Just over a year ago, I adopted a senior dog from the Kitchener Humane Society. He is a sweet and gentle dog and we named him Ranger. I was at the Wellington Terrace for a meeting, and I brought Ranger in to meet the gals at the front desk. He wanted down eagerly, so I let him onto the floor. He ran over to the tables and made his rounds around the foyer and visited with several residents. They all loved him. He was right at home; so Ranger and I trained and became a therapy dog team for St. John's ambulance. We visit the Terrace most Thursday's. One one of of our first visits we met Isabella. She was sleepy and we went into her room and nudged her awake to ask if she would like a visit with Ranger. She was quite excited and drew her blankets back for him to cuddle up with her in her bed. He nuzzled in and lay right up against her. He stretched out and closed his eyes. Isabella, rubbed his belly and laughed every time Ranger would lick her wrist. Ranger and I became very close to Isabella. I would give her big hugs and talk to her about her old black and white pup that she had a photo of in her window. While not always understanding everything Isabella said, we still communicated well, and shared many, many laughs and tender moments. Ranger and I went to visit with Isabella in her last week, and whenever Ranger would start to move away, Isabella pulled him back to her. There is no doubt that she loved that little dog. Isabella is close to my heart, and I will be so sad, not seeing her there with a smile and hugs for Ranger and I. I know few of us will grace this Earth for as long as Isabella did, and I know she is at peace, but it just doesn't change the empty place that is left. I did and do love that Isabella. I wish her family warm thoughts and memories of this sweet smiling, beautiful person. Sarah Hart
