Obituary for Thopolous "Toph" Martin

MARTIN, THOPOLOUS JOHN (TOPH)Passed away peacefully following a valiant struggle, with his family by his side at the Groves Memorial Comm. Hospital in Fergus on Thurs May 3rd, 2012. Toph Martin of Fergus in his 84th yr. beloved husband and best friend of Jean (Ecclestone) for 61 years. Loving father of John (Dianne), Anne (Jack) Karn, Paul (Darlene) and Jayne (Mark) Holmes, all of Fergus. Devoted Grampa of Jonathan (Dawn), Melissa (Glen), Michelle (Jarod), Penny (Chris), Nathan (Hilary), Jeff (Devon), Meghan (Shane) and Zach (Justine). Dearest Papa of Hunter, Hudson, Lexa, Emma, Jackson, Lauren, Arlington, and Cohen. Eldest brother of Sam (Frances), Kelvin (Arlene), Donora (John), Alex (Mary Alice), Marguerite (Alvin), Alice, Sonny (Linda). Dear brother in law of Sue, Doreen and Jim (Beryl). Toph is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and other family members. He is pre-deceased by brothers Jim and Doug (Betty) and dear brother in law to the late Jim, Victoria (Mel), Flett (Lorne), George (Hazel), Ross (Muriel) and Harold. Toph had many various community interests and involvements, these included but were not limited to hockey and refereeing and he became a member of the local lacrosse hall of fame. Toph had a lifetime involvement with the Fergus Fire Department that he joined in 1956 and served as Fire Chief from 1985-1993. The family will receive their friends at the GRAHAM A. GIDDY FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 280 ST. DAVID ST. S. FERGUS. From 7-9 P.M. Sat and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the ST. JOSEPH ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 760 ST. DAVID ST. N. FERGUS. on Monday May 7th, 2012 at 11am, followed by interment at the Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus. R.C.L. Br 275 will conduct a service to be held at the funeral home on Sat at 6:30 P.M. Parish prayers will be said at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 P.M. Remembrances to the St. Joseph Church Building Fund or charity of ones choice would be appreciated by the family. www.grahamgiddyfh.com
