Obituary for Terrance J. Beveridge

Terry J. Beveridge, Ph.D (University of Western Ontario), Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Guelph.Dr. Terry Beveridge, a distinguished Canadian scientist, died September 10 at Groves Memorial Hospital at the age of 62.His happy spirit will forever be missed by Jan, his wife of 37 years, his son Braden and his wife Becky and granddaughter Ava, plus daughter Bree and her fiance Aaron Walpole. Also by his brother Ron and his wife Gail (Markham) and brother-in-law Bob and his wife Anna (Toronto). He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews Phil, Chris, Corie, Laura and Alex and their families, plus former students and colleagues in the worldwide scientific community and his many devoted friends.Terry was a professor of microbiology at the University of Guelph for almost 30 years, during which time he had a prodigious output of book chapters and journal articles. As well he edited major journals in his field and taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He was the recipient of many awards including the Canadian Council’s Killam Prize and the prestigious Steacie Prize, awarded by the National Reasearch Council to an outstanding scientist under 40 years old. In 1985, when he received this prize, he was the first microbiologist to win it. In 2002 he was honoured to receive a Canada Reasearch Chair in the Structure of Micro-organisms.He was a leading figure in the emerging science of Geomicrobiology. The interdisciplinary nature of this work brought together microbiology, geology, medicine, chemistry and physics with the result that his laboratory was filled with young inquisitive minds working in an exciting, growing field.Beyond his own work Terry was also active in organizations in Canada and abroad which encouraged collaboration and the growth of the microbial science in general. His scientific activities took him around the world for guest lectures, visiting professorships, consulting work, and scientific committee activities. But, he always returned enthusiastically to his home in Elora where, with family and friends, he heartily enjoyed the bucolic pleasured of village life. With Jan by his side, he was a regular stoller along local roads and hiking trails, one of his many walking sticks always in hand.Terry was a Renaissance man whose conversation was filled with ideas of every kind and an ever-present, wonderful sense of humour. His knowledge of classical and esoteric pop music, science fiction, flora and fauna, wine, art and books and a host of other topics enlivened many an evening gathering with friends.Above all else, Terry was a kind, empathetic man whose love of life and joy in all it’s wonders, touched and inspired so many.Friends will be received at the GRAHAM A. GIDDY FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 37 Church St in Elora, on Thursday, September 13th 2007 from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be conducted by Rev.
