Obituary for Ted (Theodor) Mestern
Ted – Teddy - (Theodor) Mestern, 84 years old of Fergus passed away on February 15th, 2023 at Groves Memorial Community Hospital in Fergus. Thank you to the staff and doctors at the hospital for their wonderful care and attention to his needs, especially during his final hours on this earth.
Teddy is survived by his wife Pat and his children and their spouses, Andrew and Dona, Celeste and Mike, Julia and Dennis, Cecile and Greg; by his grandchildren Sam, Cody and Josh, Amy, Alex, Ben, Abigail, Jacob, Amos, Esther and Naomi and his great grandson Finn. His family in South Africa - brothers Paul, Andrew and sister-in-law Denise are grieving his passing. Teddy is preceded in death by his dad Herman, his mother Nellie, his brother Arnold and a wee baby sister.
Teddy was born in Aliwal North, South Africa to Herman and Nellie on November 4th, 1938. The family immigrated from South Africa to Ontario, Canada in 1954 He obtained his auto mechanic’s license and worked for Howes & Reeves Ltd in Fergus for 46.5 years as a mechanic then service manager. For 21 years he enjoyed owning the first Scottish shop in Fergus – Heather & Heatth Scottish Shop in the old Fergus Market building. He was an avid photographer and took all the photographs which accompanied his wife’s travel writings. He also enjoyed being a member of the first Crimestoppers organization in Wellington County and his years of being involved with cubs and scouts.
A private family burial will be held at a later date. People are invited to a Celebration of Life for Teddy on April 29th from 12:00 pm. to 4:00 p.m. in the Aboyne Hall at the Wellington County Museum & Archives where memories and music will abound.
Teddy loved Canada and the beautiful trees that grace the landscape. In his memory people who wish to salute him are asked to plant a tree on their own property; a tree rejuvenation programme in their community or as part of the tree planting planned for the grounds at Wellington County Museum & Archives. No special signage is needed. Remember Teddy as you ask the tree to spread its roots.
