Obituary for Richard Ronald "Dick" Richardson

It is with sad hearts that Dick’s family announces his death at Wellington Terrace Long Term Health Care Facility, Fergus, Ontario. We shall all miss him terribly, but find strength in the fact that he has been released from the ravages of his devastating neurological degenerative disease, and that the time has come for him to rest peacefully. Dick was predeceased by his parents Charles H.L. and Evelyn (Channens) Richardson, and his in-laws W. Stewart and Reta (Barber) Houlding. Dick was the devoted and loving husband of Janis Isobel (Houlding) to whom he was married on June 26th, 1954, and also survived by his cherished children, Louise (husband Chris Wilhelm) of Whitby, Ont., Lori (husband Peter Barnsley), and Larry (wife Jennifer Dunphy) of Guelph, Ont. Dick was a very proud grandfather of Lyndsay and Kimberley Porter, Christopher Barnsley, and Ashlean and Taylor Richardson. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane Barbour and Mary Anne Richardson, of Halifax, N.S.Dick was a natural born salesman and worked in the food industry commencing with Maple Leaf Mills and retiring from E.D. Smith & Sons, in 1988. He then pursued his life-long dream of farming his own land at Maple Haven Farm, raising cattle, and riding his favourite horse, always with dogs J.C. or Duke in pursuit. In business, as in life, his word was his bond. He will always be remembered for his wry sense of humour, his contagious smile and laughter, and his witty poems which were shared on special occasions.Dick had been an active member of the Guelph Wellington Men’s Club and Senjan Golf Course. Our family is most grateful and wish to thank and acknowledge the dedicated, caring and compassionate team of the Birch Dale Neighbourhood at the Wellington Terrace, where he had been a resident since July, 2006.At Dick’s request there was no visitation and a private interment was held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Guelph. Arrangements were entrusted to the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus (519) 843-3100. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Wellington Terrace would be greatly appreciated (cards available at the Funeral Home). Those wishing to pay their respects to the family and share fond memories are most welcome at the home of Larry and Jennifer Richardson, 123 Farnham Road in Guelph, on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 2:00 p.m.
