Obituary for Rev. Barbara Jane Frances Pettit (Mason)

June 24, 1941 - August 6, 2018

The Reverend Barbara Pettit died at home in Fergus, Ontario on Monday, August 6, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving family, John her husband of 55 years, her son Andrew (Susan) of Stoney Creek, her daughter Heather (Simon) Tinker of Burlington and her 6 grandchildren Turner, Erin, Megan Pettit and James, Adam and Blake Tinker. She is also survived by her sister in law Jane (Rudy) Holland of Tecumseh Ontario.

Barbara was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1988 after her children had grown. She served as a curate at St John’s Anglican Church in Ancaster and was appointed the rector of St James Anglican Church in Fergus in 1990. She served St James until 1998 at which point she served as an honorary assistant at the Anglican Church of the Apostles (St James and St Matthias) in Guelph.

Barbara was a keen curler. She was a past president of the Business Women’s Curling section at the Burlington Curling Club, a long time member of the Fergus Curling Club and the Guelph Interfaith Curling Club. Barbara enjoyed her flower gardens and her quilting. She and John enjoyed their travels to many parts of the world.

The family would like to thank all those who provided support for Barbara during her long battle with cancer including our wonderful neighbours, care givers and clergy.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Church of the Apostles (St James and St Mathias), Paisley Rd. and Glasgow St. in Guelph on Saturday August 18 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Canon Trudy Lebans officiating. Visitation will take place before the service at the church from 10:00 a.m. with a reception at the church to follow the service.
