Obituary for Peter Jacobs

Peter Jacobs
Norwood, ON — Peter Jacobs, age 91, passed away on Saturday, May 7th at Pleasant
Meadow Manor, Norwood, Ontario. Pre-deceased by his beloved wife Nancy, Peter will
be missed by his children: Alexander Jacobs (Elizabeth), Arnold Jacobs, and Lynn
MacAdam (Ian). His two grandsons, Derek Jacobs and Duncan MacAdam, will also
miss their Grandpa.
Peter was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting with the Rocky Mountain
Rangers and serving with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry which distinguished itself in
North West Europe as a unit of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. Peter earned
several Campaign Stars and Medals, including the 1939 - 1945 Star, the France and
Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the War Medal and Bar,
1939 - 1945. Peter entered service in the Battle of Normandy at Falaise, and served in
Europe for the duration of the War; post-war, he was stationed at Brigade HQ in
Germany. He was particularly proud of his service in the Battle of the Scheldt and his
role in the liberation of the Netherlands. Peter received the Thank You Canada Medal
on the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland, and upon invitation by the
Government of France, in 2013 Peter’s family nominated him for the French Legion of
Honour.
Peter was born and raised in Winnipegosis, Manitoba, one of seven children born to
Michael and Annie Jacobs. As a child he was a crack shot with a rifle; Peter hunted,
trapped mink and worked as a commercial fisherman on Lake Winnipegosis to help
support his family. Peter learned carpentry from his Father and was a Joiner by trade.
He remained in Scotland after the War with Nancy and their three children, bringing his
family to Peterborough, Ontario in 1964 where he worked for Trent Glass until his
retirement. In retirement, Peter lived with Nancy in Fergus, Ontario; after Nancy’s death
in 2008, Peter moved to Heritage River Retirement Residence in Elora and resided
there until August, 2015.
Peter’s accomplishments can be directly attributed to his work ethic and natural ability
for his craft, and his fervent desire that his family never experience the hardship that
accompanied him through much of his early life. His attention to detail was legendary,
and he gave the best of himself to his family, his trade and his pastimes -- as his loved
ones will attest.
A memorial service will be held for Peter on Tuesday, May 17th at 1 p.m. with visitation
beginning at 11 a.m., at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus, Ontario. He will
be interred with Nancy in the Belsyde Cemetery Cremation Garden. In lieu of flowers, a
donation to the True Patriot Love Foundation (http://truepatriotlove.com/) is appreciated.
