Obituary for Peter Hummel

Peter Hummel
Peacefully, Peter went home to glory on February 24, 2015 at Caressant Care, Arthur in his 77th year.

Beloved husband to Elizabeth (nee Stryker). Loving father to Peter (Lydia), John, Michael (BJ), Stephen (Sharon), Maggie (Eddie), David (Sharon), Elizabeth, Christine, Robert (Kaley), Andrew (Laurie) and Brian (Sarah). Special Opa to Andrew, Brendan (Abby), Timothy, Jennifer, Emily, Sarah, Anna, Stephanie, Ryan, Jessica, Derek, Cassandra, Joanna, David, Daniel, Jacob, Paul, Rachel, Luke, Phillip, Hannah, Natalie, Caitlin, Samuel, Johnathan, Jordan, Jeremiah, Ethan, Garrett, Benjamin, Tyson, Kirsten, Nolan, Joshua, Katrina, Michael, Matthew, Jasmine, Isabella, Alexandra and great-opa to Eliana, Elias, Olivia and Madison. Predeceased by his parents Hendrick and Annechien Hummel and his siblings Andy, Albert, Herman, Henk, Alie, Grace and Hennie.

Peter was born in Bedum, Netherlands and was the youngest of eight children. His parents passed on before him when he was the tender young age of 5, this was during the Second World War. This experience gave him a heart for orphans which played out in his later life in missions. Peter then went to live with relatives both in Holland and then when he immigrated to Canada at the age of 16. He bought his first farm in Varna, Ontario at the age of 21 and married his first love, Elizabeth Stryker to help him as he eagerly started farming. He owned farms in Bayfield and Arthur area afterwards. He was an entrepreneur who loved to work on farm equipment and sell it for profit. Peter gave his heart at a Billy Graham crusade. He continued to trust in and follow the Lord to help him to raise 11 children and be a special Opa to 40 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. His love for the Lord was demonstrated whenever he played hymns on his beloved accordion. Peter went on extended mission trips to Tanzania, Africa and to the Philippines as well as serving in prison ministry and soup kitchens in Winnipeg until he suffered a stroke in December 2009. In December 2013, Peter and Elizabeth renewed their wedding vows and had made their home together at the Arthur Caressant Care where they received wonderful care by their staff. It was fitting that his wife Elizabeth was at his side singing to him ‘The Old Rugged Cross” as he passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends but we rejoice knowing that he is in the great cloud of witness cheering us on until we reunite with him again.

The family would like to thank the caring and kind staff at Caressant Care, Arthur and to the ministry team from the Father’s Heart Healing Minitries (Arthur) that visited him weekly and kept him, Elizabeth and the family in their prayers.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Peter with his family during visitation at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, Fergus on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 6-9 p.m. A Private Family Funeral Service will take place on another day. Spring interment at the Clinton Cemetery
