Obituary for Norma Lorraine Harrop

Norma Lorraine Harrop (Fish) March 30, 1930 – May 9, 2022

Passed away peacefully at Groves Memorial Hospital May 9, 2022. Beloved wife of Sam Harrop (2016).
Dear Mother to David (Roseanne), Roger (Susan), Eric (Christine), Ian (Janet). Lovingly remembered by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren with a 14th arriving soon. Sister of Dr. Ralph Fish, Grant Fish, and the late June Fish (1994) and infant brother Ivan.
Sam and Norma moved with their family from Milton in 1969 to dairy farm north of Fergus using the prefix of ‘Harrcroft Acres’, which remains active today. They both loved the sport of curling and were some of the founding members of the Milton Curling Club in 1964 and became equally as active in Fergus where Norma served as Secretary for the Women’s League from 1974-1978. Together, they travelled Canada to attend various Brier tournaments and even travelled to Scotland in 1985 with the Fergus Curling Club to enjoy the Silver Broom World Curling Championship. They travelled for years with their camper from the East to West Coast of Canada taking in Expo ’86 in Vancouver along the way. They visited Australia with the Holstein Association and also to Belize with SHARE to name a few of their extensive travels. Norma was a long time member of Melville Church in Fergus and enjoyed singing in the choir. She served on the board of Groves Hospital for two years and was a long-term member of the Cumnock Community Club until it folded in 2010. She also spent many a ‘mid August’ weekend volunteering in the Tea Tent at the Fergus Highland Games.
She loved the outdoors and did extensive gardening through the years: canning and freezing ‘the fruits of her labours’. She always had knitting projects on the go and every grandchild now has an afghan as a treasure to remember her. She worked briefly at Gold’s Jewelers in Fergus before spending 20 years (1975-1995) at Husky Farm Equipment in Alma doing their book keeping.
Words cannot express the gratitude felt to all of the staff at Heritage River for their caring and compassionate ways. Norma became very comfortable to call this facility home for the last 2 ½ years. To Dr. John Stickney – she valued your friendship and loving, tender care. Visitation for Norma will be held on Wednesday May 18, 2022 from 11am-2pm followed by the funeral service at 2pm that same day at The Graham Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David Street South in Fergus (519)843-3100 www.grahamgiddyfh.com
Donations in Norma's name can be directed towards the Melville United Church in Fergus or the Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus.
