Obituary for Mary McCann

McCann, Mary
With sadness, Mary McCann’s family and friends announce the passing of Mary Ethel McCann on January 3, 2023. Deeply beloved wife of the late Bev McCann. Cherished daughter of the late Ethel and Leo Runstedler. Dear sister of Rita Lederman, Gilbert Runstedler (the late Rita), and Barbara DeWitt (Wallace), and sister-in-law of Gerry Runstedler.
Predeceased by her sister Irene Dietrich (the late Harry), brothers Jack (the late Millie), Albert (the late Jean) and Walter Runstedler. Mary, her quick wit, and her generous spirit will be missed by a legion of devoted friends and many nieces and nephews. Born in St. Clements, Mary launched her career as a Bell Canada telephone operator in St. Catharines. And a smooth operator she was. Mary was quickly promoted to supervisor and from there to management of the Ontario Region, based in Toronto. In addition to completing her tasks with efficiency and grace, Mary’s verbal skills, and ability to persuade in interpersonal relationships and negotiations soon put her at the top of the class in the Human Resources department. Over her 35-year career at Bell, Mary amassed lifelong friends and served as a role model and mentor to many women looking to succeed professionally. The family wishes to thank the staff at Hillside Residence and at The Village at University Gates for the kind and caring attention they paid to Mary.
Family and friends are invited to visitation at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home Waterloo Chapel at 617 King St. N., Waterloo ( 519 888-7700 ), Ontario on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 3 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m. in the Chapel. An interment and committal service will take place at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated and may be arranged through the funeral home at www.ggfh.waterloo@gmail.com
