Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Copp

Mary Elizabeth Copp
We are deeply saddened to share that Mary Copp passed away on March 10th 2018 in Elora, after a brief illness. Like her beloved husband David, who passed away one year ago, Mary lived into her 91st year with a joy of life, intellectual curiosity and remarkable health. She believed herself still in the prime of life with more to do and experience. She left life reluctantly, but on her own terms.
Mary is survived by her children Andrew (Irene) and their children Jon and Alex; Catherine (David); and Leslie (Christopher) and their children Emily and Peter. She grew up in Minnesota, the daughter of Leslie and Isabel Lugsdin, and was predeceased by her sister Suzy Harris.
Mary was a trailblazer in many ways – a geologist who taught at the University of Waterloo, naturalist and environmentalist, passionate music lover, potter during the early days of the Waterloo Potters Workshop, University of Women’s Club member, voracious reader, rug hooker, baker, traveler. Elora became her home with David for almost 40 years and she was a vital part of the community with many dear friends. When not in Elora or planning another trip she loved her time at the family cottage at Go Home Bay. Her love of the natural world flourished among the fascinating geology, birdlife, flora and fauna.
Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life and she was fascinated by their thoughts and plans, supporting all their adventures and sharing practical and wise counsel. Her positive nature sustained her through the many changes of life, especially during this past year.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 2:00pm at St. John’s the Evangelist Anglican Church, 33 Henderson Street, Elora ON.
We are grateful for the care of Dr. Kate Anderson, Groves Hospital, Guelph General Hospital and Heritage River Retirement Home.
Should you wish to honour Mary’s memory please consider a donation to either the Elora Cataract Trailway – enjoyed by Mary and David for many years, donations made through the Grand River Conservation Authority www.grandriver.ca or the CNIB at www.cnib.ca
