Obituary for Mark Phillips

Phillips, Mark Hilliard (1944 – 2023)

Mark Hilliard Phillips, 78, of Belwood, ON, died February 3, 2023. Beloved husband of Jo-Anne (1939-2020) for over 45 years, father to Caitlin and Robin (with first wife Linda), grandfather to Isabella and Alexander. Mark was the son of Nancy (1923-2015) and Derek M. Phillips (1920-2001) and is survived by his brother Thomas (Jaleh).

Mark grew up in Toronto, but briefly lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil as a child. When he returned he attended Glen Rush Public School and then Trinity College School, where he made lifelong friends. Mark also attended Loyola College in Montreal, but his real passion was for flying. Mark was a dedicated Air Cadet and had a successful career in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He became a pilot for Air Canada where he reached the rank of Captain and was passionate about every plane he flew, including the “ultralight” he built himself. Mark was inspired by all things mechanical. He was an avid hunter, gunsmith, and inventor. He loved the country life and his animals, but his greatest love was Jo-Anne. He missed her terribly after her passing and is now reunited with her.

Special thanks go to his friend and caregiver, Pat Beirnes.

Mark did not wish for a traditional funeral, so instead we would like to welcome neighbours, friends, and family to Mark and Jo-Anne’s home on Sunday Feb 12th from 2 to 5pm for a drop in style gathering.

Jo-Anne and Mark had a wonderful partnership and due to circumstances beyond our control we were unable to give Jo-Anne the service she deserved after her passing in 2020.

We are planning an official celebration of life for Mark and Jo-Anne in June 2023 to honour them both in style. We will endeavour to reach out by email and phone when dates and times are finalized. And you may also contact the family for more details.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
