Obituary for Larry Grant Mason

It is with great sadness that the family of Larry Grant Mason, announce his peaceful passing, on November 8, 2020 at palliative care in Guelph at the age of 82.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years Mary Lou (Mattaini), daughter Michele and her husband Tim Costin, granddaughter Kaitlyn and her husband Nicolas Sacchetti, his brother Paul (Susan) and sister Ornetta Gazzola and their families. He will be missed by his furry friend Buddy.
Larry is predeceased by his grandson Kevin Costin (2020) and his parents Colin and Della (Ritchie).

Larry was an avid “Car Guy” being one of the founding members of the Fergus Wheelers Car Club in 1958. Most notably was “Little Wee Wee” the dragster that Larry was in charge of building and Jim Homer drove, that won 35 trophies in drag racing. Larry’s passion for cars took him to the 29 Chevy “hotrod” that he had been working on for over 15 years and proudly took to many car shows.

Larry was a 20-year member of the Fergus Fire Department from 1964-1984 when he retired due to health issues. After his retirement he was still a fixture at the fire hall to sit and chat or to focus on the meticulous care and restoration of the Fergus Firefighters Association’s antique fire truck a 1934 Bickle pumper. He was also seen proudly driving the antique truck at many events in Fergus.

Larry was the recipient of a Heart Transplant in July 1993. He was an advocate for the “Be A Donor” program. Every April is Be a Donor awareness month and because he was on the receiving side of the program, he was passionate about getting the word out there. He was always so happy when local businesses and organizations would support his cause by helping to pay for a sign board or put up the donor flag. He was always happy to talk about the program whether that was a local newspaper interview or a community presentation or a local radio talk. Larry had 27 years with us after his transplant. He saw many health issues through the years and faced all of them with his fighting spirit, easy smile, and sense of humour. He will be truly missed.
