Obituary for Gordon Burleigh Coll

Gordon Burleigh Coll
Peacefully on Monday February 29, 2016 at Wellington Terrace, Fergus, Ontario in his 86th year. Beloved husband of Elizabeth, father of Andrew (Erika) and Alexander (RoseMarie), grandfather to Adam, Hayden, Liam, Megan and Trevor. Pre-deceased by his sister Norma and brother Alision. Born in Westmount, Quebec in April 1929 the Coll family moved shortly thereafter to Ottawa where Gord spent his formative years, graduating from Glebe Collegiate Institute. From there he attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick where he met his beloved Betty (Elizabeth). Both shared a keen interest in music and theatre, a passion that would extend throughout their adult lives. Married in June 1953 the Colls eventually settled in Toronto and it is here that Gord began his career in education, first at MOE and then as a teacher with the Etobicoke Board of Education. With the exception of a stint with DND in Germany in the late 1960’s, Gord would spent the remaining years of his career in Etobicoke as a teacher, Vice-Principal and Principal until he retired in the early 90’s. Retirement brought on expanded travel abroad with Betty to many exotic locales, as well as extended stays in their cherished Cocoa Beach, Florida. In between these international sojourns Gord dallied liberally in more pedestrian passions - wine, opera, theatre, tennis, gardening, reading history and keeping the Scottish whisky industry solvent. Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Gord’s life at Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David Street South in Fergus, Ontario on Friday March 11th. Visitation will be from 1:00PM to 2:30PM; Chapel Service will begin at2:30PM, Reception shortly thereafter. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.
