Obituary for George Harrison Collin

It is with great sadness that we share the sudden death of George H. Collin, PhD, MLA at his home at Maplecrest Farm, Fergus, Ontario on Wednesday, July 3, 2013. George will be dearly missed by Dorothy (Wright), his wife of 50 years and daughters; Cathy (Charlie) Johnston, Jennifer (Ian) Young, Sarah Collin (deceased July 25, 2012) (Jonathan David), and Martha (Dirk) Schrader. Poppa will be deeply missed by grandchildren; Christopher Stolworthy, Collin and Curtis Johnston, Devon and Jaden Young, Emily and Eric Schrader, Sam David, and great grand-daughter, Mia. Born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., George travelled east for his post graduate work at Cornell University, N.Y. and began his agricultural research career in Vineland, Ontario where he met Dorothy. George and Dorothy started their family in Simcoe, Ontario and followed career opportunities to Davis, California; Brooks, Alberta; Toronto, Ontario; and finally Guelph, Ontario. George began and ended his career with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. George started his retirement years with the completion of a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph. During retirement, George and Dorothy enjoyed operating a Bed and Breakfast at Maplecrest Farm for 22 years. George was an enthusiastic member of Probus, the Canadian Chestnut Council and the Ontario and Fergus Bed and Breakfast Associations. Friends will be received at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home & Chapel, 280 St. David St. south in Fergus, on Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8pm. Funeral Service for George will be conducted at Melville United Church, 300 St. Andrew St. west in Fergus, on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 1:00pm. Private family interment.
