Obituary for Esther Irene CALLEN

Passed away peacefully at Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Fergus, on Wednesday May 7, 2003, in her 93rd year. Predeceased by her husband Desmond Maule Callen (February 14th, 2001). Lovingly remembered by her son Jerry Callen and his wife Bonnie of R.R. #5 Guelph, and daughter Norma Moore and her husband George of R.R. #1 Braeside. Beloved grandmother of Lillian Herceg and her husband Andrew, Chris Callen and his fiancé Laura Brown, David Callen and his wife Jen, Andrew Callen, Sean Moore and his wife Jennifer and Ryan Moore and his wife Mandy. Always remembered by great granddaughters Jenneca and Alannah Herceg. Esther was born to Lewis Armstrong and his wife Cynthia Rathbun on Sunday April 23, 1911 in Eramosa Township. She attended S.S. #4 Speedside, S.S. #3 Shands and the Fergus High School. Her inherent love of people led her to home care where she helped at the deliveries and after care of many babies in her community. Following her marriage on January 10, 1936, she helped with her father-in-law's market garden business developing a life long love for gardening as evident in her beautifully maintained flower and vegetable gardens. She became a full-time mother but still maintained an interest in the community teaching many young people the art of quilting and keeping actively involved in her church. Esther will be sadly missed but remembered joyously by her many dear friends, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Esther's life and lasting influence will be held on Monday May 12, 2003, 11:00 AM at St. George's Anglican Church with Archdeacon Green officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Cremation has taken place. Donations may be made to the Groves Memorial Hospital Re-development Fund as expressions of sympathy. An interment service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM to place Desmond and Esther in their final resting place at Eramosa Union - Johnson's Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, Fergus, 843-3100.
