Obituary for Emery Ivan Nelson

Emery Ivan Nelson passed away on January 15, 2009 in his 95th year, at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Arthur. Born on June 8th, 1914 in Dalston, Ontario, Emery lived in Fergus for many years. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Brown) Nelson who passed away on November 9th, 2006, for 65 years. Father of Jane Nelson of Masset, Queen Charlotte Island, BC and Margaret Youngblood (Bruce) of Fergus, grandfather of Stacey McKinnon (Cory) of Ottawa, Todd Youngblood (Michelle) of Fergus, Gwaai Edenshaw of Masset, BC and Jaalen Edenshaw (Amanda) of Masset, BC, great grandfather of Haana and Nora Jane Edenshaw of Masset, BC, Lachlan McKinnon of Ottawa and Owen Youngblood of Fergus. Emery was a school teacher. After graduating from Barrie Collegiate Institute he attended Peterborough Normal School where he graduated in 1933. He commenced his teaching career at Brentwood Public School. In 1935 Emery began his university studies at University of Western Ontario where he met Dorothy Brown who became his wonderful wife in 1941. He was appointed principal of Whealey Public School in 1935 and through summer school and correspondence he received his Bachelor of Education Degree in 1941 and Bachelor of Pedagogy in 1945.Moving to Winsor, Emery taught at John Campbell Public School and WD Lowe Vocational Secondary School. In 1955 Emery earned his Master of Education Degree and became Supervisor of Riverside Public Schools. In 1957 he was appointed Public School Inspector by the Ontario Department of Education for North Wellington with an office in Fergus. In 1969 Emery became School Superintendent with The Wellington County Board of Education. After 46 years in education Emery retired in December, 1977.Emery enjoyed carpentry in his leisure hours as well as curling. He became the Fergus Curling Club historian. He was active in the Fergus Service Club being president in 1963. In 1966 he was chosen as Charter President for the Fergus-Elora Rotary Club.Emery was a sweet, loving and caring father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a friend to all and derived great pleasure being with friends, family, colleagues and students. Friends may call at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St. South in Fergus, on Sunday, January 18, 2009 from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9pm. Funeral Service will be conducted at Melville United Church, corner of St. Andrew St. and Tower St. in Fergus, on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 2:00pm. Private family interment to take place at Bear Creek Cemetery in Brigden, Ontario.
