Obituary for Derek Hayter

Derek Hayter
Mr. Hayter, 87, of Elora, Ontario, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014. Mr. Hayter was born in Oxford, England, on August 17, 1926, to Constance Elise Hayter and John Scrymgeour Hayter, the manager of the Clarendon Hotel in Oxford and later the Blossoms Hotel in Chester, England. He married Carol Williams on June 16, 1967, in Chelsea, London. For many years Mr. Hayter was the editor of the Shell Canada magazine in Toronto, where he lived until moving to Brampton and then Elora, Ontario. After retiring, he continued to work as a freelance writer. He won many International Association of Business Communicators awards for his work as a writer and editor. Before moving to Toronto, Mr. Hayter briefly lived in Montreal, Canada, where he worked for Alcan Aluminium Corp., after emigrating from England. In the 1940s, Mr. Hayter attended the King's School in Chester, England, and art schools in Chester and Liverpool. After school, he opened a commercial art business in Liverpool. Among his commissions was painting the sign that hung for many years over the front entrance of the Blossoms Hotel in Chester. The sign showed St. Lawrence, the patron saint of innkeepers, standing between two trees in blossom in a green field. After his commercial art business, Mr. Hayter obtained a position in public relations for the London- based Iraq Petroleum Company. He later moved to Baghdad, Iraq, in the 1960s to work as an editor for the company. In 1968 Mr. Hayter and his wife, Carol, immigrated to Canada. They later divorced. Mr. Hayter was an amateur photographer and, as a dedicated stamp collector, a member of the Toronto-based British North America Philatelic Society and editor of its journal. A lover of history, he had a particular interest in books about World War II, especially biographies of Winston Churchill, and he also greatly enjoyed classical music, particularly the symphonies of Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner. Mr. Hayter will be remembered also for his keen intellect, his wonderful wit, his whimsical drawings, his kind, gentle nature and his fondness for his cats. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his children, Sarah Hayter and Anna Hayter, his grandson, Kurtis Hayter, close friends Daniel Bratton, Kathy and Tom Miller, Alan Lane, and extended family Sally and Larry Martyniuk, all of Ontario. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Martin of West Hartford, Connecticut, his brother, Brian Hayter of Chester, Brooke and Bill Nagler of Farmington, CT, Anne Beadle of West Hartford, CT, and Michael and Eileen Martin of Coto de Caza, CA. Mr. Hayter was predeceased by a brother, John Hayter of Chester, England, and sister-in-law, Beryl Hayter, also of Chester.
