David Byron Taylor
November 20, 1939 - March 7, 2023
David Byron (Dave) Taylor of West Garafraxa Township passed away at home on March 7th, 2023, in his 84th year. Predeceased by his older brother, Tom, as well as his dearly missed wife, Betty Anne Taylor (née Brock). They are finally together again.
A driver for the United Cooperatives of Ontario (UCO) for decades from the ‘60s to the ‘90s, Dave delivered feed, fertilizer and other agricultural supplies to farmers all over Southwestern Ontario. He knew the back roads very well and never seemed to need a map. In his later years, Dave also delivered for Huth Big V Pharmacy in Fergus, both before and after the chain merged with Shoppers Drug Mart.
Dave is survived by his children Lisa (Jeremy Hohertz) and David (Jennifer), as well as his loving grandchildren Liam and Anna Hohertz. He will also be missed by his brothers-in-law Milton Brock (Joan) and Brian Brock (Roz Tilley); his brothers Larry Taylor and Mervin Kingswell (Barb); his sisters Sharon Quarrie (Jim) and Bonnie Free (Norm Larson), as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his family, Dave loved gardening and spent many happy hours in his retirement in his large front yard among his many flower beds. He was especially delighted when his grandchildren joined him digging in the dirt.
He also had a lifelong passion for animals. Dave was an accomplished equestrian and a member of the Rockwood Trail Riders Association for many years in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Many will fondly remember Dave’s beloved horses Tammy and Cheri Rose. Dave was also a sheep farmer for a time, and in his retirement, he began caring for donkeys -- Stella, Percy and Lucy. Dave enjoyed the company of many dogs and cats throughout his life, but special mention goes to his son David’s dog, Duke, who brought him immense joy over the last year.
Dave endured many difficulties and setbacks in his life, but he never gave up. He leaves his family a legacy of hard work and perseverance.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the Graham Giddy Funeral Home, Fergus, ON, from 12:00 pm (noon) until the time of service at 2 pm. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Dave’s memory to The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, or another animal charity of your choice.
