Obituary for David Holdroyd Copp

David Holdroyd Copp
After 90 splendid years, David Copp passed away on February 22, 2017 at home in Elora, supported with love by his family. He is survived by Mary, his beloved wife of 67 years, and children Andrew (Irene) and their children Dr. Jon Copp and Alex; Catherine (David) and Leslie (Christopher) and their children Emily and Peter.
David grew up in Toronto, the only child of Dr. Larry and Norma Copp. He made his mark as an athlete at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto where he played championship football for the Varsity Blues, earning a degree in Engineering In his spare time. A love of the outdoors and sports stayed with him his entire life, and at the age of 89 he was still cross country skiing, splitting wood and walking the trails around Elora.
Early in his career as an engineer, David joined the fledgling Cooperative Education Department of the University of Waterloo. He was passionate about the concept of Co-op, an innovative blend of academics and professional work experience which produced well-rounded graduates ready for the working world. He was proud to be involved in its success in Canada and around the world. Even after retirement, he stayed connected with the University and the many faculty, colleagues and students he counted as friends.
Perhaps David's greatest gift was his warm, generous spirit and gentle humour that charmed everyone he met. He truly was a lovely man, whose interest in others endured even at the end of his life. He adored his family and friends and a menagerie of dogs both his own and others. As “Bumpa” he delighted in his special relationship with his four grandchildren, proudly involved in all parts of their lives. When not in their home in Elora, David's heart and soul was at the family cottage in Go Home Bay. He celebrated his 90th birthday there this past summer and while he couldn't compete in the Saturday sailing race or fish his favourite fishing hole, he settled into his favourite spot on the veranda and soaked up the glorious view with a cold beer in hand.
David and his family are grateful for the exemplary care and support of many people during this last year, led by the remarkable Dr. Kate Anderson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 11 at St. John's Church, 33 Henderson Street, Elora at 1pm. In memoriam donations, if desired, may be made to Georgian Bay Forever (P.O Box 163 Stn Main, Bolton, On L7E 9Z9, online at gbf.org) or through Graham A. Giddy Funeral Homes in Fergus. www.grahamgiddyfh.com.
