Obituary for Berta Elisabeth Ledwinka (Bodin)

Born November 17, 1923 in Nurnberg, Germany, passed away due to cancer on Sunday, May 9, 2004 at Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Fergus, surrounded by her husband Erich, sons Norbert and Peter, daughter-in-laws Sharron and Deborah, grandson Michael and his wife Carmen and granddaughter Renee. Berta emigrated to Canada in 1952 and resided in Parkdale and Don Mills (Toronto). Berta moved to Elora in April 1986. By trade a florist and a gardener, her parents ran a flower and garden nursery in Nurnberg. Berta married Erich on December 23, 1947. It was Berta's love of nature, animals and far places that took her to such countries as New Guinea, Nepal, the Canadian far north, Alaska, the Antarctic, Chile, Easter Island, Africa, China, Australia and New Zealand: too many countries to list. In 1972, Berta worked as an order filler at Sears mail order department (her boys had completed schooling and she needed something to do). Eventually she worked her way up to stock clerk in the drapery department, but had to stop working in 1985 after her first bout with cancer. Berta's son Norbert was born April 13, 1949 in Nurnberg and son Peter was born April 8, 1955 in Toronto. Predeceased by her parents Berta Maria Schmidt (1958) and Ernest Reinhold Bodin (1967). A service for Berta will take place at Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home and Chapel, 37 Church Street, Elora, on Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Friends are welcomed at the funeral home one hour prior to service time. Cremation will follow the service.
