Obituary for Aileen Somerville

Aileen Somerville
Aileen passed away peacefully on Sat. Oct. 15, 2017 at Palmerston Hospital. Born on January 26 1935, Aileen was the only child of her loving parents, Willard Cockerill and Bessie Patten. She was the wife of the late Orval (1988), and beloved mother of Shirley Rowan (Ken 2001), Linda, Douglas (Amanda), and Vernon. Cherished “Granny Oats” of Sarah Rowan (Ian Campbell), Rachel Guthrie (Cam), and Catherine Soehner (Joseph). Adored "G.G." to her great- grandchildren, Anakin Guthrie, Adelaide Guthrie, Gwyneth Campbell and Kinsey Campbell. Aileen was born in Fergus and was one of the last babies delivered by the famed Dr. Abraham Groves. Aileen and Orval raised their four children on the family farm near Orton. Aileen quickly adapted to the role of farm wife, preserving food, pickling, baking, and preparing large meals for threshers during the harvest season. There were almost always guests for her delicious Sunday dinners. As her family matured, Aileen worked outside the home at the Orton Post Office and served for several years as the Post Master. After selling the family farm Aileen settled in Fergus for many years. She was a life-long learner and was especially skillful at sewing, knitting, and using her computer. Aileen will be remembered for her cheerful smile, her love of music and dancing, and her steadfast love for her family. The family wishes to thank the staff of Royal Terrace Long Term Care in Palmerston for their support and care during Aileen’s final months. The family is also grateful to the medical staff at Palmerston Hospital, for the wonderful care they gave Aileen in her final hours. Visitation will be on Thursday October 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and the Celebration of Life service will be on Friday October 20, at 11:00 a.m., all at the Graham Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St. South, Fergus. If desired, donations may be made to Bibles for Missions Foundation Canada (Fergus store), the Wellington County Food Bank, or the Lung Association. www.grahamgiddyfh.com.
