BROOKFIELD, John Francis (Frank) at the age of 81 years, passed away peacefully in Waterloo on Thursday, November 29, 2018
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a son of the late Samuel Carr Brookfield and the late Edna Florene Brookfield (Keating)
Formerly a Nova Scotia high school teacher, he received his Master of Science degree in Biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, previously having received his B.A., B.Ed. and B.Sc. with honors in Biology.
For many years he was a Biology Instructor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario where he was also the Biology Curator of the Biology-Earth Sciences Museum at that university, serving also on the Museum’s Board of Directors. Mr. Brookfield is the author and illustrator of many zoological articles in the past issues of the University of Waterloo Gazette, and also in Biologue (a publication of the U. of W. Department of Biology). He retired from the University of Waterloo in 1994, remaining a resident of Waterloo and continuing for some years to administer a U. of W. Distance education course in Biology.
He has generously funded in perpetuity for the University of Waterloo the J. Frank Brookfield Scholarships for Excellence in Biology and has also donated specimens to the University’s Earth Sciences Museum, including the skeleton of an extinct giant Cave bear from Russia, now currently on display at the Museum. Frank Brookfield is thus a member of the University of Waterloo’s ‘1957 Society.
A long time member of the Canadian Society of Zoologists, he was also for many years a President’s Circle member and then a Royal Patron’s Circle member of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, an Individual member of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and also a member of the World Wildlife Fund. He was also a life member of the University of Waterloo Retirees’ Association.
A Waterloo resident since 1973, he lived in his condominium “The Beechmount” since 1988, being one of the original owners of that building. Will also be remembered as a resident of Luther Village on the Park, Sunshine Village, Waterloo. He was an avid swimmer and gym enthusiast.
In his younger years he enjoyed drawing and illustrating, and in his senior years he took up guitar playing and singing of old time country music songs. He is predeceased by his brother, Richard of Halifax, and one nephew, John R. Brookfield also of Halifax. Surviving is one nephew D. Scott Brookfield of Dartmouth N.S., two nieces Mrs. Wendy A. Forbes (Brookfield) of Ottawa and Jane L. Brookfield of Halifax. Surviving also are his sister-in-law, H. Dianne Brookfield of Halifax and 3 grand nephews and 4 grand nieces and their families.
