Obituary for Ethel Florence Black (Ford)

Ethel Florence Black (Ford)
It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of Ethel Florence Black, aged 85 years, at Hamilton General Hospital Thursday Oct 6th, 2017. Ethel was the devoted, loving wife of 63 years to Gilmour Robert Black, cherished mother of Karen (Erik), Brian (Brenda), Steve, Mark (Tracy), and Morgan (Julie). Mom was the always proud Nanny to 16 wonderful grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Jimmy and Doug, sisters Elaine and Shirley and predeceased by her sister Beverley. Mom met Dad in Ottawa, Ontario in 1953 and there they started their journey in life together. Mom led a full life and never ever put herself first. She was loving, generous, thoughtful and above all, was truly a devoted wife and mother who would do anything and everything for Dad and her children. Often Mom sacrificed her needs and wellbeing to ensure her very large family were taken care of when times were tough for them. Whether it was a family emergency or just someone in need, she was there. When her kids were older and left home to raise their own families, Mom and Dad took up caring for foster children through the Children’s Aid in both Alexandria and then in more recent years, Guelph. Fergus, Ontario has been home for the past 15 years because that was where she could be at a central location for family and be there for them. Mom will be missed so much, by so many. She was truly a special person and our hearts are broken and knowing she is at peace will help mend and ease our pain. Special thanks to the ICU staff and notably nurse Patrick at Hamilton General Hospital for their kind, caring support in what was a difficult time. As per Mom’s request, she has been cremated and no service will be held at this time. There will be a Celebration of Mom’s life to be held at a later date. Donations in Ethel and Gil’s name can be made to the Children’s Aid Society in Guelph, Ontario. Arrangements entrusted to the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, Fergus. www.grahamgiddyfh.com
