Obituary for Geoffrey Ivan Guy

Passed away, surrounded by his family on May 10, 2015 at the age of 68.

Beloved husband to JoAnn Martin. Loving father to Mireille Drover and Andrea Lehtonen. Proud grandfather to Zoe, Tia and Demi. Also survived and missed by his mother Gladys Guy and brother Patrick Guy. Predeceased by his father Ivan Guy.

Geoff received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Queen Mary College, University of London. After graduating, he pursued his actuarial degree while working with Prudential Assurance in London, England.

Upon qualifying as an actuary in 1973, Geoff was transferred to the Canadian operation of Prudential Assurance in Montréal to the position of Assistant Group Actuary, and in 1983 he was appointed Senior Vice President and Actuary for Canada. Geoff joined Manulife Financial in 1987 as Chief Financial Officer for US Operations, and in 1993 he became Vice President and Chief Actuary. He was appointed to Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary in January 1996. On his retirement from Manulife in 2006, Geoff held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Canadian Division. He was also Chair of the Manulife Pension Trustees and a member of Manulife’s Management Committee.

Geoff is a Fellow of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the UK Institute of Actuaries. He is also a member of the American Society of Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries. He has served on the Board of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and he has held the position of Secretary-Treasurer. Geoff was also a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo where he was also Chair of the Board's Finance Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. Geoff Guy has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of Junior Achievement of Toronto and York Region, and on the Board of the Elora Festival. Geoff was the Chair of the Actuarial Standards Board, a position he held since June 2006.

An amazing man who was a true gentleman. Everyone who knew Geoff loved his whimsical goofy side. An intellectual and a man who was ethical in all his affairs. He lived life passionately and his happiest moments were shared with his wife JoAnn and his dogs.

A Funeral Service for Geoff will take place at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 36 Henderson St., Elora on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to the Guelph Humane Society.
